So, an apple a day keeps the doctor away right? Research actually supports this thought in a variety of ways. Research suggests apples may have the power to reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, asthma, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and more. Apples are rich in phytochemicals (antioxidants) such as quercetin, catechin, phloridzin and chlorogenic acid. Additionally, apples are a wonderful source of fiber, providing roughly 3 grams of fiber in a medium sized, unpeeled apple. Many of the beneficial nutrients in an apple come from the skin, so make sure you’re eating that skin! Finally, pairing an apple with a protein and fat, such as peanut butter, can help your body maintain a healthy metabolic state.
