Feelings of guilt and shame are often accompanied with foods like carbs, sweets, pastries, etc. However, would you be shocked to learn that I don’t believe in this concept? I help clients challenge their thoughts around food and learn how to embrace intuitive eating. Intuitive eating rejects the diet mentality, challenges the food police (i.e. this food is “good” and this food is “bad”) and encourages one to learn how to make peace with food through sensing hunger, fullness, emotions, satisfaction and more. Through learning how to intuitively eat, one can begin to make peace with food and enjoy ALL of life’s precious moments without wearing the devil on your shoulder dictating what is “right” and what is “wrong”.
Through the wise words of Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch, in their book Intuitive Eating, “The Food Police is a strong voice that’s developed through dieting. It’s your inner judge and jury that determine if you are doing “good” or “bad”. The Food Police is the sum of all your dieting and food rules, and gets stronger with each diet. IT also gets strengthened through new food rules that you may read in magazines or messages you hear from friends and family. The Food Police is alive and well even when you are not dieting” (p. 99).
It can be challenging and upsetting when first learning about intuitive eating. Feelings of anger and frustration may surface when one learns how society and beliefs have had such a strong control on food choice, body image, self-esteem and so much more. Intuitive eating is not an easy change. It may take some time to sift through challenging feelings, however, it will be worth it in the end when you can find peace with food and live guilt-free. So, what are you waiting for? Join me and let’s walk through this journey together. If you’re interested in learning how to intuitively eat and reject the diet mentality forever, let’s chat!
